Car
Thieves Get Zapped
by Allan Starkman
My
wife borrowed my car the other day. I got a call from her
soon after, frantically telling me that she had just locked
the keys in the car. She couldn't’t have called me at a worse
time. I was busy watching the big game. No reason to panic
though. I simply phoned my car and keyed in a code that unlocked
the doors for her, without even missing a play of the big
game. I thought to myself, WOW! I felt just like James Bond.
Welcome to the twenty-first century.
I
could have just as easily started the car, unlocked the truck
and , in case of my car being stolen, I could have just as
easily disabled the engine and located the car with the thief
still lock inside. All from the convenience of my phone. |

This
might sound a little futuristic, but these "Star Trek" items
are available today. You can also add on a perimeter sensor
which sets up an invisible detection field around your car or
truck which will not only set off your siren, pager voice warn
away system, smoke screen the inside of your car but it will
also activate your video surveillance system, which video tapes
any preset perimeter instructions. You can also use the cameras
to assist in parking via your in-dash TV monitor. Combine this
with an ultrasonic sensor that tells you verbally and digitally
the distance remaining between your bumper and any objects behind,
like driving a virtual Fort Knox on wheels. |
| But
still, "peace of mind" security does not have to burn a hole
in your pocket book. There are numerous theft deterrent security
devices to be had for less money. The simple steering wheel
lock or new devices that can now lock your shifter or foot pedals.
There is also a new steering wheel lock mechanisms that has
a built in motion sensor that, if triggered, would emit a deafening
130dB warning siren for 5 seconds before the "auto tazer" actually
electrifies itself with a visual blue arc. The vandal will get
an unforgettable yet non lethal zap of 50,000 volt electron
pulse should they touch the tazer. This device is armed or disarmed
via a keyless remote. |

Any
simple clip-on device can be installed by yourself but any hard
wire alarms should be installed by a professional shop to not
only help save you time but aggravation and to preserve factory
warranties |
From
removable steering wheels, glass etching, things that hide
your stereo, to a ref flashing L.E.D. that plus into your
lighter, any deterrent is good to make a thief think twice
about tampering with your vehicle and moving to another instead.
I like the satellite tracking device if your car or truck
gets stolen but better yet it will come in really handy to
know where my kids are when they start borrowing the car.
I’d
like to congratulate Performance Audio Sound on their debut
issue. I know it’s going to be a very informative and interesting
Canadian car magazine, in which I am happy to be involved.
I
will be happy to try to answer any and all questions on auto
and truck aftermarket accessories or installation tips in
upcoming issues of Performance Auto Sounds.
